How To Replace Chain On Ryobi Pole Saw? – Complete Guide

Installing your new chain is almost as difficult (and messy) as removing it. You’ll need to clean off both sides of the bar with solvent or kerosene to get rid of any grime that would otherwise prevent the links from meshing correctly.

Once the bar is clean, take a link from your new chain and place it on the pole saw’s bar near where it attaches to the cover plate. Slide the next link onto that first one by pushing it with your hands.

Continue adding links until they’re all connected. Use pliers to open up each rivet on the cover plate just enough for each side of the bar to connect to the same link on opposite sides.

Once you’ve done this for every rivet, tighten them back down using an adjustable wrench. That’s all there is to replacing your Ryobi pole saw’s chain!

Install the chain around the bar by pushing it onto one side of the link. Then, push the other side on so that all sides mesh together. Make sure each rivet head is positioned to match up with its corresponding link on both sides of the cover plate.

Once everything is connected, tighten down all of the rivets using an adjustable wrench.

To adjust the tension on your chain, you’ll need to loosen and tighten a series of bolts along the top and bottom portions of the bar. You’ll start by loosening each rivet that holds each side of the chain cover plate in place. 

Next, use a screwdriver to loosen up all of the screws around the end cap so that the chain can slide freely.

You’ll then need to tighten and loosen each of the bolts that run along the top and bottom edges of your bar, which will adjust how tightly you’re able to pull back on your chain.

To oil your chain, you’ll need to follow slightly different instructions depending on whether your Ryobi pole saw is gas-powered or battery operated.

If you have a gas-powered Ryobi pole saw, just add two or three drops of oil into the bar sprocket before pushing the chain back onto the cover plate.

For battery-operated models, push the slide bar to engage the motor and oil at least 10 times before using.

First, you’ll need to loosen up all of the bolts around your cover plate with a standard screwdriver. Most chains are connected by rivet heads that look similar to an open trapezoid shape.

Next, use a small tool called a “chain rivet push,” which is essentially a flathead screwdriver with a sharpened bevel, to pull the rivets out of their holes.

After removing them, slide the links of your new chain around your cover plate so that the teeth line up with the ones on the chain’s bar.

Lock the rivets into place using your chain rivet push, and make sure to keep track of which holes you removed them from so that you can replace them correctly on the other side.

Once all of your rivets are back in place, tighten each one down with your screwdriver again before running it through a few test cuts. 

First, push the slide bar all the way in to engage the motor before using your oiling tool to add 10 drops of oil onto both sides of your sprocket.

Next, pull out one link on your old chain that’s connected to both sides of the cover plate using a pair of pliers.

Then, connect your new chain to both sides and loop it around the bar so that all the rivets line up along each side.

Make sure to replace any rivet heads you removed before pushing them all back in with a screwdriver and adjusting their tension with adjustable wrenches.

You’ll need to test your cut after tightening each of the bolts, and add more oil if you start noticing too much resistance.

Before removing any components from your Ryobi pole saw, make sure that it’s unplugged or has run out of gas for a gas-powered model.

Once it has cooled down, you can start removing all bolts and chains around the cover plate with a screwdriver.

Next, pull out each chain link by hand or with pliers so that you can cut through any rivets using an adjustable wrench. Once they’re all off, you’ll be able to push back on your cover plate and slide out your bar for easier cutting.
